The desert glows in ways I didn’t expect. &nbsp; &nbsp; From large to fragments, each stone carries memory and stories. I traced their colours and shapes through my lens, just as I traced the memory they hold. I gathered these stories from what I heard and read along the way. &nbsp; &nbsp; This was my first time in the U.S., near the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation in Fountain Hills, Arizona. Bound into a single volume and installed on the wall, it is paired with a found wooden eagle hanger—an old US-made object discovered nearby. Together, the book and hanger frame the mountain both literally and symbolically. The eagle carries layered meanings: for the Yavapai, it represents protection and victory, while in the U.S. it stands for national power. The translation is quoted from Dr. Li Jen-kuei's “Research on Sinckan Manuscripts.” These contracts emerged with the arrival of colonizers who possessed writing systems. &nbsp; &nbsp; Sirayan initially had no writing system. During Dutch colonization (1624-1662), missionaries taught Siraya people to write their language using Latin letters, creating the Sinckan Manuscripts, primarily for recording land and financial transactions. &nbsp; &nbsp; Throughout the exhibition, pronouns like “you,” “we,” and “they” appear in various languages, excerpted from different historical texts. Most written records of the past come from colonial sources—European, Chinese, or Japanese. The piece includes three books made from fragments of text and images, suggesting the gaps in how history is remembered.&nbsp; &nbsp; Viewers are invited to tear out a page using one of three knife sculptures shaped after the Qing dynasty’s “aboriginal boundary” (1750–1790). Observing qualities such as speed, duration, loudness, distance, and rhythm, it translates these auditory impressions into unconventional visual and tactile forms. I evaluated Chinese-language sources and collaborated with Takagi through verbal and visual discussions.
